Nutrition is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary needs. Good nutrition – an adequate, well
balanced diet combined with regular physical activity – is a cornerstone of good health.
Poor nutrition can lead to reduced immunity, increased susceptibility to disease, impaired physical and mental
development, and reduced productivity.
Optimal nutrition means obtaining a balance of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) and
micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).
Macronutrients provide energy for organ and tissue functions and growth, and micronutrients are needed in
small amounts for chemical processes in the body such as metabolism, growth, and protection against infections.
In addition, plenty of water is needed to build cells and regulate body processes.
